Wednesday, 25 September at Europahuset – 12.00-13.00
Lunch Seminar with Jan Svensson, Sébastien Treyer and Jan-Olov Johansson
In 2013, Institut français de Suède and the European Commission Representation in Sweden have launched a series of seminars dealing with scientific research and research policies in Europe. The second seminar titled “Food Security and Sustainability: the Double Challenge” will be on Wednesday September 25.
Ensuring food security – the basic right of people to the food they need – is one of the biggest challenge facing the world today. If done right the planet can provide food for all but the resources we depend on are being rapidly degraded. Could the environmental costs of expanding food production push the system beyond its limits?
A profound change of the global food and agriculture system is needed if we are to nourish the world’s rapidly expanding population. Achieving sustainable increase in food production calls for investments in agricultural research and a renewed international commitment in terms of policy.
The speakers will provide insight on this matter as well as some reflections on sustainability aspects in the Swedish research and innovation strategy. They will address the following questions:
- Where is food security in the Swedish strategy for a bio-based Economy?
- What are the main challenges for agriculture and how can research help?
- How are national and European agricultural policies addressing the issue?
Jan Svensson is Deputy Head of the Department of Research at Formas. He is also the representative of Sweden in JPI-FACCE – the Joint Programming Initiative on Agriculture, Food Security and Climate Change. Sébastien Treyer is Director of programmes at Iddri (French Institute for Sustainable Development and International Relations). He is the coordinator of the “Agriculture and Food” programme of the institute. Jan-Olov Johansson is an agronomist and a science journalist. He will moderate the seminar.
