Découvrez notre lauréate FINA 2022, Anna Lunde Hermansson

Anna is a PhD student at the Maritime Environmental Science unit at the department of Mechanics and Maritime Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg.

Her research group focus on the environmental impacts from shipping, where Anna’s primary focus is on the marine environment. As part of the Horizon 2020 project EMERGE (Evaluation, control and Mitigation of the EnviRonmental impacts of shippinG Emissions), Anna is investigating the environmental effects from exhaust gas cleaning systems (also called scrubbers). Scrubbers are installed on ships to reduce the sulphur oxide emissions to the atmosphere, allowing for a continuous use of cheaper heavy fuel oils instead of switching to cleaner, more expensive, distillate fuels. The seawater that is used as the scrubber agent, essentially being sprayed over the exhaust, becomes acidified and highly contaminated with metals and organic compounds which is then discharged back into the sea. The load of contaminants stemming from this discharge are very problematic and could have unforeseen effects on the marine environment.

The French Institute in Sweden has organized on Tuesday, May 17th, 2022 the official ceremony for the FINA award.

Anna Lunde Hermansson was at the Résidence de Francee to present her marine research project : « Shipping challenges the endurance of the sea » and received her award.
