Since 2023, Legal Day has been an initiative led by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs (MEAE), which recognises Law as an essential tool for promoting peace, security and stability around the world. As part of this initiative, the month of October is marked by events on legal issues organised by French embassies, consulates, Alliances Françaises and French institutes across the globe. These events seek to showcase the importance of legal systems for our societies, raise public awareness of universal principles of Law, and foster dialogue on contemporary legal challenges.

Sweden, a country with a long-standing commitment to peace, multilateralism and human rights, has a legal framework that reflects a distinctive approach to resilience and international cooperation. The Swedish legal system, shaped by its tradition of neutrality, its total defence strategy (totalförsvar) and its proactive commitment to international law, illustrates how legal frameworks can adapt to contemporary challenges.

For the fourth edition of Legal Day, the French Embassy in Sweden will host a seminar on Thursday October 29 from 3pm to 5pm at the French Residence in Stockholm (Narvavägen 26), entitled: “From Peace to War: Adapting the Law in Times of Crisis”

Speakers from the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs (UD), the Swedish Ministry of Defence (Fö), KTH’s Total Defence Centre, the Swedish Defence University (FHS) and the French Higher Institute of Armaments and Defence (pantheon- assas-ISAD) will discuss the adaptation of the legal system, the total defence strategy and Sweden and France commitment to international law. The French Ambassador to Sweden will deliver an opening address.

The aim is to provide a better understanding of Swedish Law, offer a French-Swedish perspective, and raise awareness of the importance of the law in a rapidly changing world.
